CMD Puppy Applications

To get on our waitlist for a puppy, copy and paste the questionnaire/application below and email it to us at fourwindsfarmgb@gmail.com. We will get back to you and let you when we are having the next litter that fits what you want, and then you can put a deposit down if you wish. We also sometimes have older puppies or adult dogs available that have more experience with livestock, or puppies available at a reduced price with a stud/breeding contract (must be within two hours of Green Bay)... Please add a note at the end if either of these options are of interest to you.

What are your preferences regarding sex and color of your puppy?

Are either of these a deal breaker for you?

Describe the temperament you hope for your puppy to have. (Knowing it is hard to predict with complete certainty an adult dog’s personality, but that there are observations we can make, along with the Volhard Personality Testing, that give a general indication of how the puppy is likely to turn out.)

Do you have any children or anticipate having any during the lifetime of the dog (10-14 years)? If so, what are their ages now? (This is not a disqualification by any means, as all our dogs are excellent with children of all ages; it is just to help find the best puppy for you.)

How would you describe your household/farm and lifestyle? (Loud, busy, active, laid back, quiet, etc.)

Do you have any other livestock guardian dogs or house dogs? (If you have other dogs, please list their sex and age.)

What livestock do you have? What animals would the dog be guarding?

What do you expect out of your puppy in terms of behavior with these animals? (E.g. will the puppy be with the livestock 24/7, be in an adjoining pen, have supervised visits, etc.)

If you do not currently have any other livestock guardian dogs and intend your puppy to be a full-time 24/7 LGD, do you intend to get another LGD as a partner for this puppy?

If he will be more of a general farm/family dog will he come in the house and travel with you?

What experience do you have with livestock guardian breeds? If you have not owned one before, have you done research regarding the needs and challenges of these breeds? Why do you think the CMD would be a good fit for you?

Do you understand that it can take up to 1-2 years before an LGD is fully trustworthy (without supervision) with livestock, especially smaller ones like chickens?

If you intend for the dog to be a pet do you know that some CMDs will feel a need for a "job" and may want to be outside at night or need to be given some kind of "work" as an outlet to satisfy that drive?

How much land do you have and what type of fencing do you have for your livestock or expect to use for your dog?

Do you understand the most livestock guardian dogs will eventually need some type of fencing, either physical or wireless/radio fencing to stay where you want them? (The CMD is being bred to wander less, but depending on the amount of land you own and proximity to neighbors and roads a fence of some sort is still usually needed.)

Are you considering breeding this puppy in the future?

Are you open to allowing your dog to be evaluated by me (the breeder) at 1-2 years old and if the dog passes evaluation to contribute their genetics to the CMDR breeding program? (Through being used as a stud if male or if female having one litter under the guidance of the breeder.)

Do you own your own house/land? If you are renting do you have your landlord’s permission to have a dog? (If renting please include landlord’s name and phone number.)

Is everyone in your household completely on board with getting a puppy?

Do you agree to provide for the training, social, nutritional and veterinary needs of this puppy?

Do you agree that if training/behavioral or health issues should arise with the puppy to contact me (the breeder) for advice, especially before pursuing rehoming?

Do you agree that if for any reason you ever need to rehome this dog, that it must be returned to me (the breeder) or in some cases rehomed with guidance from me? Under no circumstances shall the dog be placed in a shelter or rehomed to an unknown home without my knowledge.

Do you understand that I will not hold a puppy for you until I receive your deposit? (If you are unable to get your puppy for an unforseen reason 75% of the deposit will be refunded to you, the remaining balance will be kept by the breeder.)
